PRESS RELEASE

Hugh Pomeroy Memorial Scholarship

Steve Podborski, President of the Fondation Ski Canada Foundation is very pleased to announce that in response to the June 30, 2009 deadline seeking scholarship applications from Canadian Snowsports Athletes, scholarships have been awarded to two outstanding applicants.

The 2009 recipients of scholarships to permit the continuation of educational studies leading to a University or College degree are:

Demian Carson – Nordic Combined

Pierce Smith - Snowboardcross

Mr. Carson is a past member of the Nordic Combined National team who represented Canada at several World Championships.  He is married, attending UBCO in his 3rd year and is now assisting Nordic Combined wherever possible. He will receive $4,000 to support his educational pursuit.

Mr. Smith was a recipient last year of $4,000 from the FSCF.  He maintained an average of 80%+ in his first year and is continuing his studies at Humber College. The FSCF is delighted to once again support Mr. Smith in his studies with a further $2,500.

Mr. Podborski stated:

“Fondation Ski Canada Foundation is committed to providing assistance to current athletes as well as former athletes who continue to give back to the sport, and we are very pleased to make these awards.  The Ski Foundation continues to seek for support in keeping these scholarships actively helping the athletes who have represented this great country so well.”

The Fondation Ski Canada Foundation will commence payment of the first instalment of these scholarships immediately.

The Hugh Pomeroy Memorial Scholarships are created in memory of Hugh Pomeroy, a member of the Canadian Snowsports Nordic Combined Development Team who died tragically while training in 1986.

The Fondation Ski Canada Foundation was incorporated in 1973 to raise funds and to financially support Canadian snow sport athletes in the form of grants, bursaries and scholarships and work for the improvement of ski and snowboard programs associated with the Canadian Snowsports Association.
